These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things
I just added a neocounter here and found out I have visitors, not just from the Philippines and the US but, from the UK, Chile, Greece and other countries.

And I'd like to hear from all of you. From all the people I know (bloggers already linked to this place) to people I haven't heard from yet. Let's start a discussion. We may agree or disagree. But hey! If we all just agreed, then life will probably be a bit dull.

I want you to guys to answer a few questions just to get the ball rolling. You can answer it in your own places (let me know if you did!) or you can answer it here. I would prefer you answer it here so that we can have a lively discussion.

1. What is your all-time favorite movie? You can have one, you can have three, you can have ten, you can even have a hundred. But for space purposes, let's limit it to 3.
2. What is your all-time favorite book? Again, let's limit it to 3.
3. What is your all-time favorite song?
4. If you could live anywhere in the world (aside from where you are living now and/or your country of citizenship), where would you go?
5. What would you rather be doing right now?

***

I'll start the ball rolling.

1. What is your all-time favorite movie?

Hihintayin Kita Sa Langit

It's a Filipino movie from the early '90s I believe, directed by Carlitos Siguion-Reyna and starring Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta. I was about 12 years old when I first watched the film. I was a pre-teen schoolgirl, not knowing anything about love. And this to me, represented everything there is about romantic love. They defied the odds for love. They went through hell and back together. It is unlike the love story movies in the present because it was all so real. Love story movies nowadays seem fake. But this was very raw and became very real. Just writing about this movie is quietly tugging at my heart a bit. There was never a question of realism or unrealism in this movie. It's overrated yet underrated. It made me want to love and to love with all my heart.

2. What is your all-time favorite book?

That would have to be Jhumpa Lahiri's "Interpreter Of Maladies".

I confess. I only knew of this book's existence, not because I knew it was a Pulitzer Prize winner for 2000 but, because my crush, at that time, recommended it. *insert girly giggle here* Since he was a writer and editor, I trusted his word. And good thing I did. It's the one book that I read, not just every year but, four to five times a year. I recommend it to everyone I know. I've even written about it here in several posts already. It's short, straight-to-the-point and just real. The book is locally available at Fully Booked, on Amazon, and Barnes & Noble, in case you're interested.

3. What is your all-time favorite song?

The Blower's Daughter by Damien Rice

It's very, very haunting and very sad. And it gets really emotional every time I listen to it but I can never let it go.

4. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I thought this was gonna be easy (United Kingdom) but I'm having second thoughts. Is it the easy way out? Is this where I really want to be? I guess home is still where the heart is. And in that case, my heart is in Manila.

But if I could, there are three places I'd love to make my home: London, England, Chester, England and San Francisco, California.

5. What would you rather be doing right now?

I'd rather be in bed right now. Particularly a hotel bed in another country (Singapore or London, perhaps?). I've said it before and I'll say it again. I need a vacation.

What about you guys? You can answer these questions in your own blogs, or you can answer it here using the comment boxes.

8 Things
Tagged by Mela

Once you’ve been tagged, you have to write a blog with 8 facts/things/habits about yourself, saying who tagged you. In the end you need to choose the 6 people to be tagged and list their names. No tag backs.

1. I've been drinking coffee since I was 15 years old. I tried to quit when I was a freshman in college. But that only last a couple of months and I just went back to drinking coffee again. It's been 8 years and I haven't stopped since. In fact, if I don't drink coffee even for a couple of hours, I start getting jittery all over.

2. I am bibliophile. I have been collecting and reading books since I was 9 years old (back when a P250 book now only costs about P35 back then). Back then, I collected mostly books from the Sweet Valley series, Ann M. Martin books, Beverly Cleary books which evolved eventually to Jane Austen classics, Christopher Pike series, Fear Street series, VC Andrews books. And now at 25, 14 years later, I hope that my literary choices have matured just as I have matured. There's books by Douglas Coupland, Nick Hornby, Jodi Picoult, Jhumpa Lahiri, Richard Russo, Donna Tartt. But you know, all work and no play makes Jaq a very dull girl. But instead of reading young adult books, I'm reading its counterpart: chick lit! Jane Green and Marian Keyes are my favorite chick lit authors.

3. A lot of people already know this. I love, love, love everything British. Well probably not everything. I went to Britain a couple of years ago and fell in love with it. I just loved it. My goal now is to go back and spend a couple of months there. And it doesn't hurt that British men are hot!

4. I am addicted to shopping. It doesn't matter what I buy as long as I am buying something. Although I am partial to buying books, CDs, bags and shoes. Tragic, I know.

5. It annoys me endlessly when people do not make an effort to understand when I do it myself. And when I tell them I don't do this or that, they say "Since when?" Um, probably about 3 years and counting. Seriously. Hello? Don't you notice anything else but yourselves? Oh that's right. You thrive on gossip.

6. I am a very frustrated singer. But that doesn't stop me from loving my music. I will listen to anything and everything for the first time. But it takes a lot more to keep me hooked. I am currently loving the music of Camera Obscura, Iron and Wine, Marvin Gaye, Billie Holiday, Queen, Belle and Sebastian, Itchyworms, Pupil, two Idols (Taylor Hicks and Elliott Yamin) and a whole lot more. I always go to Tower Records and Music One because they have an almost complete collection there. I loathe going to Odyssey because it is just a music store pretending to be a music store. They only carry Top 40. And not even the good ones. So frustrating!

7. I hate, hate, hate people who constantly compare us to Starbucks and think that we are inferior to them just because we are new. Starbucks does not equal coffee people! And besides, Starbucks coffee isn't that good, you know. They're just good marketers. And it would do you good to try something new for a change you know.

8. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I am in dire need of a vacation! I am longing to go out of the country just so I can forget about work. Being in the Philippines, no matter where I am in it, will always remind me of work. I need five straight days of no-thinking-of-work! I hope my plans of going to Bangkok this August pushes through!

Tagging: I know it's just supposed to be 8 but everyone do this! And do let me know so I can read your 8 things.

2005
Stole this from

What did you do in 2005 that you'd never done before?
Open up a new business

Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I never make any. I always seem to forget them so they never get done. Although, this year, I promised myself to practice self-control.

Did anyone close to you give birth?
Two of my friends gave birth last year.

Did anyone close to you die?
Nope.

What countries did you visit?
Ha! I never got to go out of town this year!

Knowing that I can handle problems, especially under pressure.

My relationship with a family member

Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nope. I drink Vitamin C everyday. As for injuries, I had really sore muscles but that's it.

What was the best thing you bought?
For myself? The spa treatments I had. Heaven!

A person.

Be patient.

What do you wish you'd done less of?
Less negativity.

How many one-night stands?
none.

THE O.C.! And Lost. And CSI Las Vegas.

What did you want and get?
A laptop and and iPod and a new coat.

I turned 25 last year. And I spent it at Nurture Spa. 3 hours of massages, scrubs and wraps. Heaven.

What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
More breaks, or times off from work. I think I was overworked this year.

Eclectic. I never stuck with one look.

What kept you sane?
God. My family. My friends. Especially my friends.

JOSH HARTNETT FOREVER!

What political issue stirred you the most?
GMA and all issues involving her.

Several people in Tagaytay.

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2005:
God is always there to take care of you and me.

What was the nicest thing someone told you about yourself:
That I was a nice boss.

I drank Vitamin C everyday. Does that count?

You do anything you are ashamed of this year?
Yup.

How much money did you spend in 2005?
If I'm being honest about it, 100k is probably no exaggeration.

What was your proudest moment of 2005?
Knowing that I can handle a business.

What was your most embarrassing moment of 2005?
None, I think.

If you could go back in time to any moment of 2005 and change something, what would it be?
Everything happens for a reason that's why I won't change anything.

What are your plans for 2006?
Train more people. Go back to school. Have a vacation!

How are you different now that the year has ended?
I'm more open and I'm more quick.

What are your wishes for the new year?

Ten Years Ago: I was 14 years old and was a high school freshman. I thought I knew a lot already at that time. But now I am old enough to know that I knew nothing back then.

Five years ago: I was a college sophomore, trying to experience almost everything that I can in college. I never sat still in college and was always immersed in something or another.

One year ago: I was immersed in training for Mocha Blends while trying to still stay sane.

Yesterday: I went to work, worked, laughed, talked, sold food and drinks while silently fighting the urge to catch a few winks. Okay. Fine. It wasn't a silent effort but I did try.

Five Snacks I Enjoy: V-Cut Potato Chips, Polvoron with Pinipig, Ensaymada, Ice Cream, Cakes

Five Songs I Know All the Words To: You Oughta Know (Alanis), I'll Be (Edwin McCain), Turn Me One (Norah Jones), Some Kind Of Wonderful (Joss Stone), These Are The Days (Jamie Cullum)

Five Things I Would Do with 100 Million Dollars: Buy lots of DVDs, Help out with the education problem in the Philippines, Buy lots of books, Buy lots to develop, Put in bank/investments

Five Places I Would Run Away To: London, San Francisco, Singapore, Paris, Tagaytay

Five Things I Would Never Wear: Size 5 shoes, corsets, stilettos, shirts with objectionable prints, hoop earrings

Five Favorite TV Shows: Friends, Lost, WWE, Coupling, The OC

Five bad habits: babbling, impulsive shopping, not thinking, doing just what I want, refusing to sleep when I really need to

Five biggest joys: coffee, seeing my nephews, seeing my friends, getting to travel, shopping

Five favorite toys: my cellphone, my PC, my beanie babies, can't think of any more

Five Fictional Characters I Would Date: Aragorn, any of Josh Hartnett's characters in his movies (hehe), Inman (Jude Law)

Tagging: Bundi, Cha, Mela, Buch, Trish. Actually, everyone answer this! And let me know so I can see your answers.

Five Things
Stolen from Mela:

Five Things You May Not Know About My Time in School
*A student filed a complaint against my friends and I citing "moral damage" as the main reason because of an email that went into the wrong hands.
*When I was applying for graduate school, I applied to four schools: Academy of Art University (it was still Academy of Art College then) in San Francisco, Ca, Boston University in Boston, MA, Tisch School of the Arts at NYU in New York, NY and the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in Los Angeles, CA. I got into two (AAU and BU) and I opted to go to AAU.
*From the first grade to 4th year high school, I was always class number 1, except during the seventh grade and freshman year of high school when I was class number 2.
*Doc Sol is my college professor that I really look up to, even though I only got to take her class in junior year of college. Her achievements astound me and I consider her my mentor and inspiration to do the things that I am capable of.
*I used to love Math in grade school and high school but abhorred it in college.

Five Things You May Not Know About the Job/s I Have (or Had)
*I worked for the student government in all my four years of college at the Ateneo, and finally serving as a Legislative Representative of my batch on my final year.
*I am and will always be a writer.
*Even though I had help, I was always the writer, director, cameraman and editor of the short films I made in college.
*I am a certified barista and I want to be a barista forever.
*I used to write for two webzines. Both have since folded up. I now write for an Australia-based webzine called Plasma Rag.

Five Things You May Not Know About My Online Life:
*Technically, I started Jax Place on May of 2002 but I neglected it. I revived it again and Jax Place officially started on March 26, 2003. Jax Place will turn two in two months!
*I have accounts with Blogger (my public blog) and Livejournal (my friends-only journal). I used to have an account with Blurty but I've already deleted that one. I also used to have an account with Blog City and Tripod but I never used those. And I have an account with Xanga but I only use that to post comments on my friends' Xanga journals.
*The very, very first Jax Place was not an online journal but a website about my favorite things that I created from scratch back in 1997. Geocities deleted it already though.
*Back when I was still proficient in HTML (1997, I think), I also made a website for my high school barkada. I think it's still up but I don't visit it anymore.
*I've had some unpleasant visitors to Jax Place that's why I don't post too many "private thoughts" here. I save that for my LJ (which is protected) so that my "private thoughts" don't get to the wrong hands again.

Five Things You May Not Know About Where I Live:
*I have lived in this house for almost 11 years now.
*The very first family house I lived in was in Davao. My family lived there for around 10 years. But I only got to experiencing living in it for about seven years.
*We moved to our next house in 1983 and stayed there until 1994.
*The city I live in is pretty big. We have around four congressional districts and it's hard to know where they start and where they end.
*I cannot imagine myself living at the south part of Metro Manila.

Five Things You May Not Know About My Home Life:
*I live with my parents and my two older siblings.
*My oldest brother lives with his family about three blocks away from our home.
*I share a room with my older sister.
*It is very quiet during daytime in this house because people are rarely home. The only meal most of us regularly eat at home is breakfast.
*When my parents bought the vacant lot beside our house, I asked if we could have our own swimming pool put there. They denied my request.

Five Things You May Not Know That I Desperately Want:
*I want everything handed to me on a silver platter. Sometimes it's so hard to get what you want because of all the challenges you have to face. Don't get me wrong. I love those challenges. But sometimes, it can get really tiring.
*I desperately want the Philippine film industry to drastically change.
*I want to be able to follow-through on the three film projects that I have started or attempted to start with three friends.
*I really want GMA and Soriquez out of the government.
*I want WWE (with Edge) to come back to Manila!

Five Things You May Not Know About What I Do in a Typical Day:
*I log on to the Net at least twice a day, when I wake up and before I go to sleep.
*The first thing I always check after I wake up is my cellphone.
*I always base the clothes I'm going to wear on the shoes I'll be or the bag that I'll be using.
*Rare are the times when I go home with the sun still up.
*I don't have a typical day.

Riot On An Empty Street (Kings of Convenience)

I was so excited when I saw this at the local Tower Records store. Finally, after three years of waiting, I got hold of a Kings of Convenience CD. I could just listen to this over and over and over again. It takes getting used to though since their music is a bit slow. But it's such a refreshing change from all rap and hiphop and rock music that's coming out nowadays. Besides, you can't go wrong (well, most of the time) with Scandinavian music.

Come Away With Me (Norah Jones)

One of the best albums to come out in so long. Norah Jones is such an amazing musician. And her songs in this album are some of the most heartfelt songs to come out in a long time. This album put her on the music map and will probably stay there a long, long time.

Warm Strangers (Vienna Teng)

Vienna Teng was a surprise discovery. I was at Tower Records, looking for a "musician to discover". Her CD was so relaxing and so soothing. It makes me want to lie down on a bed of grass, close my eyes and absorb her music into my soul.

Bossa Carioca (Lisa Ono)

Lisa Ono makes me want to just dance the night away. Or at the least, bop my head and snap my fingers with the beat of her music. It doesn't matter if you can't understand what she's saying. More importantly, it's no longer about relating to the song but swaying to the song. It's really quite therapeutic.

Quiet Is The New Loud (Kings of Convenience)

One of my favorite songs, I Don't Know What I Can Save You From, Track 4 in this album, was the reason I fell in love with this group. This album gave me hope for the present music industry. That somewhere out there, someone is making an effort with their music.

Figure 8 (Elliott Smith)

Elliott Smith (R.I.P.) was, is, one of the greatest singer/songwriter out there. He writes and sings from the heart and you feel it everytime he performs. Amazing, really. Figure 8, in my opinion, is one of his best albums.

From A Basement On The Hill (Elliott Smith)

From A Basement On The Hill is Smith's very last album. The very album he was working on when he died. It's a weaker CD compared to Figure 8 but Smith, even in death, still doesn't disappoint. A must-have for any Elliott Smith fan.

Waiting For My Rocket To Come (Jason Mraz)

I thought John Mayer was the better singer. But Jason Mraz proved me wrong. He's a good writer and a great performer. His whole album tells us that living life shouldn't be hard, it should be fun!

Dear Catastrophe Waitress (Belle and Sebastian)

I love Brit music! And this is no exception! Dear Catastrophe Waitress is so different from popular music today. And it's so catchy! I just love listening to it and singing along to it.

All That You Can't Leave Behind (U2)

This album shows us why U2 is still in the music business, thirty years later. Great songs, great lyrics, great music, great performances. Can't ask for more.

The Soul Sessions (Joss Stone)

The 18-year-old soul singing sensation from England. When you hear this girl sing, you won't believe she's only a teenager. So powerful yet so raw. Amazing, amazing singer.

Twentysomething (Jamie Cullum)

Jazz has never sounded better until Jamie Cullum came. You will love everything about jazz once you listen to this.

In Time: Best of REM (REM)

R.E.M. has been around for so long. This collection of their greatest hits show us why and how.

Fallen (Evanescence)

One of the best rock bands to hit the 21st Century. Their haunting first single, Bring Me To Life, just describes the whole album perfectly. Its haunting, troubling but full of emotion.

The Piano Player (Maksim)

Never has a piano player been sexier. Maksim shows us that being a piano player shouldn't be stiff and so formal. The piano player can be edgy, emotional, charismatic and amazing. Maksim is always best experienced live.

My 2004 Movie List
These are personal reviews of all the movies I watched for the first time in 2004. See if you share the same opinions!

1. 21 Grams - Sean Penn two Best Actor nominations at last year's Oscars. One nomination was for this movie. Naomi Watts also received a Best Actress nomination for her portrayal of a widower who felt the only solution for her problems was revenge on Benicio del Toro's character. And incidentally, del Toro also received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his portrayal of an ex-convict struggling to have a better life. Although the actors were great in this movie, I couldn't help but compare this with the director's first movie, which was a really exceptional film. I found myself struggling to finish the movie and was just really utterly bored with it. Although confident, I just felt Amores Perros was a better movie.
2. 50 First Dates - I loved the tandem of Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler in The Wedding Singer. They were funny, sweet, lovable and believable. That maybe why I was looking forward to watching this movie. I was actually expecting a pale comparison to the first movie and was prepared to just enjoy the actors' comfortable tandem. But it was a good movie. And funny. Henry (Sandler) was such a sweet, sweet character, it was hard not to love them.
3. A Wrinkle In Time - This is one of my favorite books and I was quite excited to see this on the small screen (it was a TV movie). It wasn't quite what I was expecting. It was still different from the book. It was a good production but it wasn't in tune with what I imagined it would be. But I heard there's another production in the works so I'm quite looking forward to that.
4. Alien vs Predator - I'll try to break it gently. AVP was not a very good movie. I was bored to tears. I couldn't wait to get out of the theater. I just wanted to go home and sleep. That's one movie I will never see again.
5. America's Sweethearts - I
like Julia Roberts and I like John Cusack but this just doesn't work for them. Maybe if it was a different movie, I'd like their combination. But I didn't. That's why I don't recommend this.
6. An American in Paris - I love this movie! Gene Kelly was such a smooth talker in this movie and any girl will be crazy not to fall in love with him in this movie.
7. Ang Huling Birhen sa Lupa - Why this movie won Best Picture, I will never know.
8. Annie - A shorter version of the original Annie, it was a good production for a TV movie. But, IMO, deprived the yougner viewers of the joy that Annie the musical is.
9. Bad Boys II - Martin Lawrence and Will Smith are back! It's still enjoyable. It's still funny. It's still heart-pounding. It's still an adrenaline-pumping movie.
10. Bend It Like Beckham - I never thought I'd enjoy this as much as I did. But I did! *grin* Lines are very witty and the storyline's quite unique. I'm looking forward to watching another movie by this writer and director.

You can read the rest of the movies here

From Katz:

I'm exceptionally artistic!

Fair enough. Perhaps they haven't. But now that you know, you must become one with your inner self.

Virtues: You look for immense creativity and individuality in people, including yourself. You're not happy with anything less than brilliant, and you focus on being expressive. You value energy, liveliness, and upbeat personalities, but you're not supportive of moodiness when you yourself can be unreliably moody. Seeking activity, you like the bustle of business but need the secluded atmosphere of a studio or private corner.

Aspirations: You feel the need to express your talents, whether it be through writing, drawing, singing, dancing, composing, performing, or photographing. While you strive to ever improve your work, you want to display it as soon as possible when your impatience kicks in. You want to be a prodigy but you might not have the means right at your fingertips. Trust me, do NOT move to New York to do it. Yeesh!

Quirks: Conformists bother you because of their lack of individuality. You're often late or unreliable. You're showy and refuse to share the spotlight. You only tell little white lies. You worm your way into the hearts of others, but be careful; some people despise the show-offs.

Factors: Surround yourself with activity and you'll always have material to work with. Involve friends and family in your projects so they don't feel like envious outsiders.

Future: Show business or not, you'll settle down happily if you're among those who appreciate your natural talents and desire to perform. Don't stay in one place too long, and don't be too hasty in defining your relationships. Who are you to judge what only time will tell?
